The Chronicle Herald, Lifestyles Section, The Book Shelf by Allison Lawlor, Saturday, Febuary 9, 2019
Allison Lawlor’s story highlights the books by John Graham-Pole – Journeys with a Thousand Heroes: A Child Oncologist’s Story – and Dorothy Lander – The People’s Photo Album: A Pictorial Genealogy of the Antigonish Movement. Allison also introduces the new publishing house, HARP Publishing, The People’s Press, of which The People’s Photo Album is the first publication.
It features one of the unsung heroes of the Antigonish Movement – Cassie Fraser – who was a trailblazer for gender equity at St. Francis Xavier University 60 years ago in 1959. Dorothy took the photograph shown above in 1992 when her mother was visiting from Ontario. Cassie Fraser is serving Dorothy’s mother Mary Lander, on the student serving line in Morrison Hall Dining Room. Cassie turns 90 on Feb. 23 this month. When Dorothy called her to tell her she was in the news, Cassie said she was going to drive right out and pick up a paper.
As Allison reported in The Book Shelf, Lander and Graham-Pole will both be paying tribute to the heroes in their lives who often went unnoticed, at their joint reading at the Halifax Public Library, Feb. 14, 2019, 6:00 p.m.
